Desde tiempos coloniales, la construcción de casas en los Estados Unidos se ha realizado con estructuras de madera, debido a la influencia de la cultura Inglesa, y a los alguna vez abundantes bosques que brindaban su materia prima. En la actualidad los bosques maduros de más de 30 años han sido sobre-explotados, quedando en pie solamente el 10% de sus árboles de edad maderable. En los Estados Unidos los bosques promedio están a 10 años de alcanzar una edad maderable. Ello ha representado una disminución de la oferta, que a su vez ha provocado grandes aumentos en los precios en el mercado de la madera, de forma tal que la Asociación Nacional de Constructores de Casas, (NAHB por sus siglas en Inglés), estima que tan solo en los últimos dos años el costo de la estructura para una casa promedio se incrementó en $5,000 Dólares. En la actualidad, la construcción de casas con estructuras de madera presenta grandes inconvenientes, entre los que destacan: alto costo, tiempos de construcción prolongados, y baja calidad. |
Las proyecciones de la Industria Forestal Norteamericana indican que los precios de la madera continuarán incrementándose.
Debido a la necesidad de cortar árboles cada vez más jóvenes, la calidad de la madera ha disminuído notablemente. Por ejemplo, una pieza de 2" x 4" de grado uno en la actualidad, equivale a la clasificación de grado tres de hace diez años. |
| Por todas las razones anteriores, el acero se ha convertido en la mejor de las opciones en estructuras para construcción residencial de que dispone el público en la actualidad. |
